These scholarships are designed to make NIAS library and other resources accessible to Nordic and Baltic researchers and students. A scholarship covers inexpensive travel to and from Copenhagen and accommodation in a NIAS room at Nordisk Kollegium, with full board for a period of one to two weeks.
It must be noted that because only one room at the Nordisk Kollegium is available for this scholarship programme, stays are arranged subject to a time schedule administered by NIAS. Applications are assessed three times per year.
Monday 6 December 1999 is the closing date for applications for scholarships during the period February-April 2000. Applications must be made on special forms obtainable from NIAS.

Travel grants to Asia
NIAS awards scholarships which will (partly) cover travel and accommodation costs primarily in connection with conference attendance and networking activities in Asia and secondly for fieldwork in Asia. There is a special application form for these grants.
1. Conference Scholarships: NIAS will award a limited number of scholarships to help cover travel and accommodation costs for advanced students who wish to present a paper at a conference or workshop in Asia. These scholarships are particularly designed for young scholars who are in the process of completing their Ph.D. theses or who have recently obtained their Ph.D's.
It must be documented that the candidate's paper has been accepted for presentation by the organizers of the event in question. A copy of the paper must also be submitted to NIAS. Applications are accepted throughout the year.
2. Networking Scholarships: In order to stimulate network building and intensify contacts between Nordic and non-Nordic students NIAS will award a limited number of scholarships to help cover travel and accommodation costs for advanced students wishing to engage in networking activities. These scholarships are particularly designed for young scholars who are in the process of completing their Ph.D. thesis or who have recently obtained their Ph.D.
A plan of the activities to be carried out must be submitted to NIAS and a detailed report on the findings filed with NIAS subsequently. Applications are accepted throughout the year.
3. Fieldwork Scholarships: NIAS awards scholarships, which will (partly) cover, travel and establishment costs in connection with fieldwork in Asia
A maximum of DKK 15,000 is available per project, but an overall budget should be supplied and evidence of frugal planning will be an advantage. Support is generally limited to travel costs, accommodation and a modest daily allowance, though a case may be made for other items.
Closing date for applications for Travel Grants for the year 2000 is Monday 17 January 2000. Applications must be made on special forms provided by NIAS. In addition, the applicant must submit name, address and institutional affiliation of two referees. The applicant must likewise send a copy of his/her application to the referees and ask the referees to submit a valuation of the project and the applicants qualifications for carrying out the project to NIAS. The referees' valuations must be submitted to NIAS no later than Monday 31 January 2000.
EFEO Grants
The Ecole Francaise d'Extreme Orient (EFEO) in Paris is France's foremost centre for Asian Studies. Not only does it provide a major research centre in Paris, but it maintains regional offices throughout Asia (Hanoi, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Kyoto, Phnom Penh, etc.) which assist visiting researchers in many ways.
Thanks to a recent agreement between NIAS and the EFEO Nordic researchers can have access to the resources of the EFEO in Europe and Asia. NIAS will offer one grant each year, covering budget airfare and a month's reasonable accommodation and living allowances to allow a Nordic researcher to base his or her research at one of the EFEO centres. The stipend is valued at up to DKK 15,000. The relevant EFEO centre may also provide some assistance in finding accommodation and obtaining access to research collections.
Applicants should normally hold a Ph.D. or equivalent, though advanced doctoral candidates with a particularly strong case may be considered. Applications, with a description of the project including information about its duration should be sent to the Secretary at NIAS. The application must also state which EFEO office is to be visited and how affiliation to this specific EFEO office would contribute to bringing the project to fruition. Applicants who can show that they have been in contact with their proposed host office(s) will be at an advantage.
Grant recipients are required to submit a report on their activities (approximately two pages) to the Directors of EFEO and of NIAS within a month of the conclusion of the stay.
The deadline for application for an EFEO grant in 2000 is Wednesday 1 December 1999. An application form for this grant is available from NIAS.
SOAS Grants
NIAS offers two one-month grants each year, covering budget airfare to London and reasonable accommodation and living allowances, for Nordic scholars wishing to have access to the libraries and intellectual life of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). The stipends are valued at up to DKK 15,000 each. SOAS will assist in finding accommodation and obtaining access to research collections. Grant recipients are expected to present a research seminar at SOAS and are required to submit a report on their activities (approximately two pages) to the Directors of SOAS and of NIAS within a month of the conclusion of the stay.
Applicants should normally have a Ph.D. or equivalent, though advanced doctoral candidates with a particularly strong case may be considered.
Applications with a description of the proposed project and a statement of how a visit to London would contribute to bringing it to fruition are to be sent to the Secretary at NIAS. Applicants must be in contact with one or more scholars at SOAS before submitting an application.
The deadline for application for a SOAS grant in 2000 is Wednesday 1 December 1999. An application form for this stipend is available from NIAS. An application form for this grant is available from NIAS.
IIAS/NIAS Alliance European Grants
In 1997, the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) and the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies (NIAS) formed a Strategic Alliance aimed at further strengthening the fabric of Asian Studies in their two regions and at promoting Asian Studies at a European level.
The Alliance plans a number of joint activities, including research projects, fellowships and conferences. As part of this cooperation, the Alliance has announced the first Alliance European Grants.
Two one-month grants are now available per year for Nordic scholars wishing to undertake research at an Asian Studies centre elsewhere in Europe, or for European scholars wishing to undertake research at NIAS or another Nordic centre of Asian Studies.
The grants are valued at DKK 15,000 each, sufficient in most cases to cover a budget airfare and reasonable accommodation and living costs.
Applicants should normally hold a Ph.D. or equivalent, though advanced doctoral candidates will also be considered. A grant recipient is expected to deliver a research seminar his/her host institution during the course of the stay.
Applications with a project description and information of how the grant would help bring the project to fruition are to be sent to the Secretary at NIAS.
Applicants must have established contact with the proposed host institution before making application to NIAS. They will be required to submit a report on their activities (approximately two pages) to the Director of NIAS and (in the case of Nordic scholars travelling to Europe) the director of the host institute within a month of the conclusion of the stay.
The deadline for application for the IIAS/NIAS Alliance European Grants is Wednesday 1 December 1999. Application forms for these grants are available
Post-Doctoral Leiden Scholarships
Since 1994, the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) and NIAS have rented a flat in Leiden for visiting Nordic or Baltic scholars at post-doctoral level.
In addition to the accommodation, which is free of charge, IIAS/NIAS award a number of air tickets (APEX/Jackpot) to Schiphol (Amsterdam Airport) in connection with stays from two to four weeks' duration. Holders of these Leiden Scholarships will be affiliated to IIAS, provided with office space and other facilities and will be able to make use of IIAS's contacts with other major Dutch centres for Indian, Indonesian, Japanese, Chinese and Islamic studies.
The Leiden Scholarships are announced twice a year, usually in May and November. Applications must be made on special forms obtainable from NIAS and should contain a short project presentation, a curriculum vitae and an indication of preferred dates of arrival and departure.
Wednesday 1 December 1999 is the closing date for applications for scholarships during the period January-June 2000.
When not used by holders of the Leiden Scholarships and NIAS fellows, the flat is available free of charge for stays of a minimum of two weeks to Nordic post-doctoral scholars who cover their travel expenses.
